RULES & DIVISIONS

AGC FRIENDLY

GENERAL

    • All matches are 6 minutes long, and at the end both competitors will have their hands raised.

  • 🟦 Phase 1 — Stand-Up Only (First 2 Minutes)

The first 2 minutes of the match must remain standing, encouraging active wrestling or judo exchanges with real takedown attempts.

Guard Pulling Rule in Phase 1

If a competitor decide to pulls guard during this phase, the following rule applies:

They have 20 seconds to attack immediately and achieve one of the following:

    ✔ A sweep
    ✔ A clear submission attempt
✔ A scoring action (clear advancement)

If none of these actions occur within 20 seconds, the referee will:

    1️⃣ Stop the match
2️⃣ Reset both athletes to a standing position
3️⃣ Penalty to the guard-pulling competitor for breaking the stand-up rule

Sitting Without Engagement (Applies at All Times)

If a competitor sits down without engaging, at any point during the match, this results in a penalty, and the referee will restart the match standing.

    🟩 Phase 2 — Ground Grappling (Final 4 Minutes)

The final 4 minutes of the match transition into ground grappling, where athletes are free to pull guard without penalty.

    Guard Pulling Rule (Phase 2)

Competitors may pull guard freely, but the guard puller must:

    Engage immediately
✔ Begin attacking or setting up meaningful actions (sweeps, submissions, transitions)

If the guard puller is active, the match continues normally.

    Evasion Rule

If the referee observes that the standing competitor is avoiding engagement
such as backing away or refusing to connect

➡️ The evading competitor will receive the penalty,
because they are preventing the guard puller from initiating action.

This ensures fairness and maintains continuous momentum in the match

  • If the referee observes inactivity or stalling, they will issue a warning and begin a 20-second evaluation period.

If the competitor continues to stall during those 20 seconds, a penalty will be applied at the end of the period.

    Penalty Progression

    Penalties escalate as follows:

    • 1st Penalty: +1 point to the opponent

    • 2nd Penalty: +2 points to the opponent

    • 3rd Penalty: +3 points to the opponent

    • 4th Penalty: Disqualification (match ends)

Accumulating four penalties, results in immediate disqualification.

    Other Types of Penalties

Penalties may also be issued for:

    • Minor infractions (illegal grips, disengagement, unsportsmanlike behaviour, etc.)

    • Major infractions (dangerous actions, prohibited techniques, deliberate fouls)

Minor or major infractions can result in penalties or direct disqualification, depending on the severity.

For full details about what counts as minor or major infractions, please refer to the AGC Official Rule Book.

POINT SYSTEM

  • Mount & Back Mount (4 Points)

Points are earned when you achieve mount with both knees on the floor.
If there is a significant size difference and it’s impossible for both knees to touch, the referee will make a judgment call.

Your opponent’s back must be on the floor, and your knees must be below their shoulder line.
Full back mount with your knees on the floor also scores 4 points.
If your opponent’s hands are trapped under your legs, the position still counts.

    Back Control (4 Points)

Points are awarded for achieving back control with both hooks in or with a body triangle.

*To earn the points, you must maintain control for longer than 3 seconds.

  • Clean Takedown (Ends Beyond the Guard)

3 points are awarded when you perform a takedown that ends outside your opponent’s guard, with:

    • No submission threat

    • At least 75% of your opponent’s back on the mat

    • Clear control held for 3 seconds or more

Clean Sweep (Ends Beyond the Guard)

A Clean Sweep occurs when a competitor moves from bottom guard to the top position, and the action ends outside the opponent’s guard.

    To score 3 points:

    • The opponent who was on top must end on the bottom

    • Over 75% of their back must be on the floor

    • The position must be held for 3 seconds or more

    • There must be no immediate submission threat during this control

    Guard Pass (3 points)

Points are awarded when you successfully pass your opponent’s guard, with:

    • 75% or more of their back on the mat

    • Stable control for 3 seconds or more

  • Normal Takedown

You earn 2 points for taking your opponent down in the traditional way.

    To score the 2 points:

    • Your opponent’s butt, back, or both knees must stay on the mat for 3 seconds or more.

If your opponent immediately attempts a submission, the points will only be awarded after you escape the submission threat.

    Sweeps

A Normal Sweep occurs when a competitor attacks from any bottom guard position and transitions to the top position.

    To earn 2 points:

    • You must hold top control for 3 seconds or more

    • You must not be under a submission threat

Just like takedowns, if there is an immediate submission attempt from your opponent, points will only be awarded after you escape and establish control for 3 seconds.

    Knee on Belly

You score 2 points for Knee on Belly when:

    • You are clear of your opponent’s guard

    • Your knee or shin is placed on their hip, belly, chest, or ribs

    • Your other knee is fully off the ground

    • Your opponent is on their back with at least 75% of their back touching the floor

Points will not be awarded if you remove your knee for 3 seconds or more and then place it back again.

  • A single point is awarded when a competitor almost scores any of the official point positions but cannot maintain control for the full 3-second requirement.

This works similarly to traditional advantages, but in AGC we do not use an advantage system.
Instead, we award 1 point to recognise the athlete’s effort and the clear attempt to complete a scoring manoeuvre.
